Unigene is a biopharmaceutical company engaged in the research, production and delivery of small proteins, referred to as peptides that have demonstrated or may have potential medical benefits. Unigene has developed a patented manufacturing technology for producing many peptides cost-effectively. The Company also has patented oral and nasal delivery technologies that have been shown to deliver medically useful amounts of various peptides into the bloodstream.
The Company’s primary focus has been on the development of calcitonin and other peptide products for the treatment of osteoporosis and other indications. Unigene has licensed worldwide rights to our manufacturing and delivery technologies for oral parathyroid hormone, referred to as PTH, to GlaxoSmithKline. The Company received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration ("FDA") for our nasal calcitonin product, trademarked Fortical®. The U.S. marketing and distribution right to Fortical® have been licensed to Upsher-Smith Laboratories, which launched the product immediately following FDA approval.
The Company has also licensed worldwide rights to our patented manufacturing technology for the production of calcitonin to Novartis Pharma AG. Unigene has an injectable calcitonin product currently approved for sale in the European Union and in Switzerland for osteoporosis indications. The Company maintains facilities in compliance with current Good Manufacturing Practice guidelines capable of manufacturing calcitonin, PTH and other peptides.
